Supercell Oy is a mobile game development company founded in June 2010 in Helsinki, Finland. The company’s debut game was the browser game Gunshine.net, and after its release in 2011, Supercell started developing games for mobile devices. Since then, the company has fully released four mobile games: Hay Day, Clash of Clans, Boom Beach, and Clash Royale, which are freemium games and have been very successful for the company, the first two generating revenue of $2.4 million a day in 2013.
Clash Royale, Clash of Clans push Supercell to $2.3 billion in 2016 revenue
On June 21, 2016 Tencent announced a deal to acquire 84.3% of Supercell with USD 8.6 billion. Japan’s SoftBank values Supercell at $10.2 billion. On 8 December 2016 Supercell launched a web animated series Clash-A-Rama for promoting the Clash Universe.
Supercell is one of the leading mobile games developers in the world, with its products being among the world’s most successful mobile games.
The employees of Supercell donated 3.4 million euros to the Finnish New Children’s Hospital project. It is presumably the largest charity donation done by company employees in the history of Finland. Supercell has also given donations to the American charity organization Watsi.
Supercell, the maker of hit mobile games Clash of Clans and Clash Royale, said that sales growth was flat $2.3 billion in 2016. That’s flat compared to a year ago. But the Helsinki company generated earnings before taxes and other items of $1 billion, up from $897 million a year earlier. That’s an enormous profit for a company with just 213 employees and only four games on the market.
But that’s the story of the modern mobile game industry, which SuperData Research said hit $40 billion in 2016. Supercell’s games are free-to-play, where you can play them for free and spend real money on in-game items. Supercell’s fans compete with each other via clans, and they spend money at insane levels.
This is why China’s Tencent Holdings acquired most of the shares of Supercell last year at a valuation of $10 billion.
